Playing With Your Cat
March 15, 2023

Cats are super playful, which is one reason they make such fun pets. Playing is actually good for your kitty, both mentally and physically. It’s also a wonderful way to spend time with your furry friend, and just make her feel loved. A Vinton, VA vet offers some advice on playing with Fluffy in this article.

Make It Routine

Kitties are definitely creatures of habit. If you pay attention, you’ll realize that Fluffy probably sticks to a pretty steady schedule for meals, grooming, naps, and cuddle sessions. Try to play with your feline pal every night, at roughly the same time. You may be surprised at how quickly she comes to expect—or even demand—it.

Don’t Play Favorites

Do you have more than one furball Make sure to pay them both equal attention. Kitties can get quite envious of one another!

Mix Things Up

As the saying says, variety is the spice of life. Mix things up by trying different toys and games. Use a laser pointer one day, and a feather toy the next. You may find that Fluffy has specific toy preferences.

Don’t Invite Rough Play

Our feline buddies are full of interesting quirks. One of the less endearing ones? Fluffy’s habit of practicing her hunting skills on her humans. If your kitty bites or scratches, show your disapproval by blowing in her face, clapping your hands, or stomping your foot. You can also say ‘No’ or ‘Bad kitty’ in a disapproving tone. Then, walk away and let her ponder things for a while. Never punish your furry pal for attacking, however: that may scare and confuse her, which could make matters worse.

Make It Challenging

Fluffy should have some toys she can use by herself when you are out. However, she should also have some things you can play with together. Your feline friend will find playtime more fun and more challenging if she can’t anticipate what her ‘prey’ is going to do next!

Don’t Worry About Overexertion

With dogs, it’s important to be careful not to overdo it. Our canine pals will push themselves to exhaustion to please their humans. Cats? Not so much. As soon as Fluffy gets bored or tired, she’ll just walk away … and start thinking about her next nap.
