Summer is on the way! If you enjoy spending time in the Great Outdoors, you may be looking forward to taking your canine companion on some adventures. Fido loves exploring new trails! Spending time in a pretty spot with your furry best friend is a great way to unwind and get away from it all. However, you will need to take a few precautions to keep your pup safe. Pack Wisely 

Be sure to bring some basics along for your pooch. Water is at the top of the list here. You may want to get your canine buddy a doggy water bottle with an attached dispenser. Don’t let Fido drink from puddles, lakes, or streams, as the water may be contaminated. You’ll also need to bring some waste baggies along. We would recommend taking a first-aid kit as well. 

Keep Fido Controlled

Dogs are very adventurous, and they love exploring new ground with their human buddies. However, giving your furry pal free range can be dangerous. Keep in mind that dogs love to sniff around nooks, crannies, and crevasses, particularly if they scent small animals. You definitely  don’t want your pooch running off after a squirrel or worse, having a run-in with a rattlesnake or another wild animal. Much of this comes down to training. If you aren’t 100% sure that Fido will always obey verbal commands, keep him leashed. Retractable leashes can be great, as they give pups room to move a bit more. However, they can be dangerous in certain areas, such as near cliffs, riverbanks, or other hazards. Bring a regular leash along, just in case.

Don’t Overexert The Pup 

While some of our canine friends are very athletic, that isn’t always the case. Before taking Fido on long or difficult hikes, start with some easy walks and build his endurance up slowly. Pay attention to your pet. If he seems like he’s getting tired, immediately give him water and head home. 

Precautions

Before taking your furry buddy hiking, make sure he’s current on his vaccines and parasite control. Fido should also be microchipped and wearing ID tags. You may want to get a GPS-equipped tag, especially if your pooch is prone to bolting.
