Helping Your Rescue Dog Thrive
May 15, 2023

May 20th is Rescue Dog Day! Have you recently adopted a rescue dog? We think all dogs deserve second chances. However, it may take your new pooch some time to adjust, settle in, and really feel safe. Going to a new home is a big deal for Fido! A Vinton, VA vet offers some advice on helping your canine pal blossom and thrive.

First Impressions

It’s important for Fido to get started out on the right paw in life. You’ll want to make sure that things go well on Gotcha Day. Before bringing your pup indoors, take him for a walk around the block. This will help him burn off any nervous energy, and just get a feel for his surroundings.

Pawsitive Interactions

One thing that is very important is making sure that all interactions are pleasant. Only speak to Fido in a gentle tone. If he’s done something bad, such as digging or chewing, you can reprimand him verbally in a sterner tone than you usually use. However, you should never punish him or yell at him. Rewarding good behavior is a much better way to go.

Consistency

Pets often feel safer when they are kept on a pretty consistent schedule for things like walks and mealtimes. Get Fido started out on his new doggy agenda right away. You’ll also need to be consistent as far as verbal commands. Use the same words or phrases every time.

Plenty Of Entertainment

Making sure that Fido is getting lots of exercise is also very important. Dogs that are nervous or reactive often tend to be much more tightly wound up when they aren’t able to burn off their zoomies. Walks, toys, and playtime are also great for bonding. Make sure you have a sturdy leash, one that won’t snap or slip out of your hand if something spooks your canine buddy and he bolts.

Make Life Fun

You don’t have to break the bank to keep that tail wagging. Just taking time to walk and play with Fido every day will go a long way. Toys and treats will also help your furry pal feel safe and loved. Watching a rescue dog thrive is truly heartwarming, and can be a very beautiful and enriching experience.
