Things Cats Should Be Thankful For But Aren’t
November 15, 2023

Thanksgiving is coming up. At this time of year, it’s important to take time to reflect about the things we are grateful for. Our feline pals have clawed their way up that list, and are currently sitting pretty high up, licking their paws and surveying us with that cute judgmental look kitties do so well. However, while we are definitely grateful for Fluffy, she may not be quite as appreciative of certain things as she should be. Read on as a Vinton, VA veterinarian lists some things your pet probably isn’t thankful for, but should be.

Veterinary Care

Most—if not all—of our feline patients would rather stay home and take yet one more nap than visit us. (To be fair, many cats are more frightened of the car ride than their actual appointments.) Regardless, Fluffy will both look and feel better with proper care. She may not understand or appreciate the vaccines, tests, and parasite control products that protect her from so many diseases and parasites. Even so, those things help keep her healthy, and therefore happy.

Petproofing

Our feline friends are hardwired for mischief, and they have a way of getting into, well, everything. Many of you have plucked your cats off bookcases and counters, or taken unsafe ‘toys’ away from them. These things will keep Fluffy safe, but don’t expect her to be happy about it.

Vacuum Cleaners

Vacuuming is a must for anyone with a furry friend. However, Fluffy isn’t a big fan of these appliances. They suck up all that fur she so carefully placed all over the house!

Online Shopping

If you ask Fluffy if she wants something from an online retailer, such as Amazon, you’ll probably just get a slow blink—and perhaps a meow—in response. However, your furball will definitely appreciate the toys and furniture you’ve ordered!

Spay/Neuter Surgery

Getting Fluffy fixed isn’t just important for preventing unwanted litters … it’s also beneficial in other ways. Your furry bff will be calmer, less prone to unwanted behavior, and generally healthier after getting spayed or neutered. If your furry pal is still intact, talk to your vet about getting the procedure scheduled.

Medication

Medicine—both for humans and for animals—has come a remarkably long way in the past century. It can literally save your kitty’s life! Just don’t expect Fluffy to be happy about being pilled.
